Music Resources: High School Choir Literature

*Note: Literature selection will depend on the dynamics of the specific group. These include number of singers, voice parts, and skill level. The following list includes repertoire for a variety of situations.

Title: Bells of Rhymney (SATB)

Arranger: Jimmy Joyce

Composer: Pete Seeger

Publisher: Aberdeen Music, Inc.

Inventory No.: 45-21036

This piece would suit an advanced high school group. The sparse accompaniment provides little harmonic support. This piece would benefit a group working to fine-tune their intonation. Rhythmic precision and diction are especially important. The piece has historical significance that could be incorporated into rehearsal instruction.

Title: Think On Me (SATB or SAB)

Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Composer: Alicia Ann Scott

Publisher: Shawnee Press

Inventory No.: 3301499

This piece would be suitable for a middle-level or more advanced high school choir. The unaccompanied section provides an opportunity for unaccompanied singing. Phrasing, expression, and interpretation would be points of emphasis in this piece.

Title: Kyrie Eleison (SATB)

Arranger: Charles C. Hirt

Composer: Franz Joseph Haydn

Publisher: Alfred Music Publishing

Inventory No.: AP.WBCH93307

This piece would be suitable for a fairly large high school choral ensemble. The Latin text promotes round, unified vowel production. The broad vocal ranges demand proper singing technique and breath support. Dynamics are also key.

Title: Zigeunerleben (SATB)

Editor: Abraham Kaplan

Composer: Robert Schumann

Author: Emanuel Geibel

Publisher: Walton Music

Inventory No.: HL 08500857

This piece would be suitable for a middle level (or more advanced) high school choir. Uniform textures offer tonal support. It can be sung in either German or English. Students are given opportunities to practice dynamics and round vowel production. Short soprano, alto, tenor, and bass solos provide opportunities to showcase individual students.

Title: Sure On This Shining Night (SATB)

Composer: Samuel Barber

Publisher: G. Schirmer

Inventory No.: HL 50308930

This would be suitable for a fairly advanced high school choir. Intonation, phrasing, breath support, and expression are key elements.

Title: City Called Heaven (SATB)

Arrangers: Josephine Poelinitz and Henry Leck

Publisher: Colla Voce

Inventory No.: 1841709

This piece would be suitable for any level of SATB high school choir. It features an expressive male or female solo, set against gospel style choral singing. Students would gain exposure to the gospel/spiritual style. Students have the opportunity to focus on vowel production, blend, balance, and style.

Title: Russian Picnic (SATB)

Composer: H Enders

Publisher: Hal Leonard

Inventory No.: HL 50302510

This piece would be suitable for a middle-level to advanced high school choir. Students can experience the Russian folk influence in the text and melody. The song presents harmonic and melodic challenges, but is highly entertaining to hear and sing. There is an opportunity for a tenor solo. Students can work on diction, “Russian” vowels, and singing with support and energy.

Title: Who Will Be a Witness? (SAB)

Arranger: Donald Moore

Publisher: Alfred Publishing

Inventory No.: AP 27097

This piece is suitable for a developing high school choir. Students can gain experience singing in basic harmony and practice syncopated rhythms. The melodic simplicity allows focus on good vocal technique. Dynamics and vowels are also points of emphasis.

Title: The Water is Wide (SAB)

Arranger: Audrey Snyder

Publisher: Hal Leonard

Inventory No.: HL 08703258

This piece is suitable for a beginning-level or developing high school choir. The smooth melodies promote legato singing, breath support, and unified vowels. It would benefit groups who have limited experience singing in parts, because each line is very melodic. This could help develop expressive elements.

Title: Ave Verum Corpus (SATB)

Arranger: J Muller

Composer: W.A. Mozart

Publisher: G Schirmer

Inventory No.: HL 50295870

This piece is suitable for a middle-level (or more advanced) high school choir. The Latin text promotes pure, unified vowels. Students can practice legato singing, staggered breathing, and fluid dynamic contrast. Legato lines promote good singing technique.
