Middle School Vocal Music: Program Overview

Miss Herd is the general/vocal music teacher for grades seven and eight. Ms. Sherman is the piano accompanist, and also helps lead music classroom activities.

Middle school music students progress through a general curriculum in a choral rehearsal setting. The curriculum is aligned with the appropriate level of national and state music standards. Students explore music theory, history, culture, and analytical listening concepts and how they relate to rehearsal of appropriate choral literature. Students have solo and group performance opportunities that foster their growing musicianship.

Middle school students are required to enroll in one year of music. After this requirement is met, students and parents may choose whether or not to continue to participate in music class. Seventh and eighth grade students attend music class every day for 45 minutes. While the two grades meet separately for class, performances will feature the combined seventh and eighth grade choir. Middle school students will present two public programs—one in the fall and one in the spring—to present their choral literature.

Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to audition for Accents, a select mixed ensemble. To be eligible, the student must also be enrolled in regular music class. In addition to the school music programs, Accents will perform for community events. This group rehearses for 30 minutes three times a week, typically in the morning before school. (Rehearsal scheduling is subject to change depending on the needs of the students and teacher.)
